While many shops are full of imported milk, products like cheese and ghee, millions of litres of milk rot annually because of lacking of market and technology for making milk products. Not all people in Mbeya region and Tanzania as a whole have acces to milk or milk products for consumption.
Lack of industries wich can preserve or transform milk into other products is a bottleneck for a country like Tanzania, wich has to spend scarce foreign currency for imported milk powder and related products.
INVESTING IN MILK INDUSTRY WILL CREATE A MARKET FOR OUR FARMERS, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY SUBSTITUTE EXPENSIVE IMPORTS TO SOME EXTENT.

In general dairy farming is appreciated by farmers in Mbeya Region. Milk has become more and more a "cash crop" during the last years and provides farmers with an income source, ensuring them regular cash all over the year.
In Mbeya region generally milk is a common food in households. In the majority of households milk is consumed. The benefical effects of milk are know.A major constraint to milk consumption is the low purchasing power of households during specific periods.Consumers claim a regular supply of good quality milk and state that for many areas this is not yet possible.
Operating milk kiosk is a favorable means to assure good quality milk regularly supplied to household consumer. During the last two years new milk kioks have started operation. But in many areas these facilities, channeling bigger quantities of milk are not found yet. In the existing milk shops, kiosks usually storage and cooling eqipements is not available and control measures assuring milk quality are not introduced. Farmer groups operating milk kiosks have still to strengthen their organizational structures and management capacities in order to become more successful in this business.
The demand for "exotic" milk products as butter, cheese, yoghourt, ice cream, etc,is nearly wholly satisfied by imports.
Lack of processing facilities, poor marketing management of Tanzanian producers and low quality of the products are the reasons for this situation.
As a result,to improve all these economical activities, training in quality control, business planning,is needed. At the same time lack of access to storage and cooling equipments and to credits are a serious hindrances which prevent from the development of milk and derivatives business.
To increase sales volume for the future by replacing imported products, and to start marketing products from Mbeya region to others areas, this process should be encouraged if the conditions are met (markedly management capacity of the actors, and access to funds)
